Dead princes are the comic relief in Stardust. Every royal brother who gets taken out joins a ghostly peanut gallery, judging the survivors, and that gag never gets old. The rest is a fairy tale that wants to be everything at once: romance, chase, comedy, witch movie and sky pirate adventure. Matthew Vaughn mostly keeps the plates spinning. Claire Danes gives Yvaine a grumpy spark, a fallen star who is done with being chased, and Charlie Cox grows from a shop boy into a real hero without it feeling forced. Michelle Pfeiffer steals scenes as a witch who gets older every time she uses magic, which is a great villain rule. The middle is where it sags. The sky pirate detour is a big swing that runs too long, and Ricky Gervais drops in to do his usual awkward bit. It made $137.5 million worldwide. A 7.6 because it’s a big, warm storybook with a few pages too many. $66.22 says you see the next shooting star and immediately feel bad for whoever just fell.
What works: Michelle Pfeiffer is a gleefully nasty witch, Claire Danes and Charlie Cox are charming, and the ghost princes are a perfect running joke.
What doesn’t: The sky pirate detour runs long, and the movie juggles so many plots that the middle sags.
Who it’s for: Fans of The Princess Bride who want a bigger, sillier, more magical cousin.
Tristan turns out to be the son of a captive princess, which makes him the true heir to Stormhold. Yvaine’s love makes her shine bright enough to destroy Lamia, and she and Tristan rule the kingdom for many years before rising into the sky together as stars.
The English village of Wall sits beside an actual wall, and on the other side lies the magical kingdom of Stormhold. Shy shop boy Tristan (Charlie Cox) wants to win over Victoria (Sienna Miller), so he promises to bring her a falling star. He crosses into Stormhold and learns the star is a person, a very annoyed young woman named Yvaine (Claire Danes). He's not the only one looking. A witch named Lamia (Michelle Pfeiffer) wants the star to make herself young again, and a pair of royal brothers want the ruby Yvaine is holding. Matthew Vaughn directs. One hundred twenty-eight minutes, one sky pirate.
Anyone who would cross a magic wall for a crush. Check if the crush is worth it first.
