The runaway train in Stop! That! Train! is aimed at a nuclear site wedged between an animal shelter and Laurie Metcalf’s house, and that’s about as sophisticated as the plotting gets. Adam Shankman is copying the rapid-fire disaster spoofs David Zucker made in the 1980s, and for every gag that lands, another one just sits on the tracks. The style creaks now. What keeps this thing rolling is Ginger Minj and Jujubee as Tess and DeeDee, two out-of-work friends who sneak onto the luxe Glamazonian Express pretending to be crew. Their friendship is warm enough that you’ll actually care when first-class life starts pulling them apart. RuPaul plays President Judy Gagwell, who has to explain the whole mess to the country. A storm called Stormaganza and a haunted tunnel show up, because why not. It made $4.5 million worldwide on a reported $12.8M. A 5.4 because the leads are lovely and the jokes run hot and cold. $4,002 says you announce the next stop on your morning commute in full stewardess voice and get one very confused thumbs up.
What works: Ginger Minj and Jujubee have warm, easy chemistry, and the whole movie is a big-hearted celebration of drag.
What doesn’t: The old spoof format feels dated, and the gags land so unevenly that long stretches just coast along.
Who it’s for: Drag Race fans who have always wanted to see the queens headline a full-on disaster movie.
A freshly fired Donna talks Gagwell back into action, and the President boards the train herself. Tess and DeeDee make up and, with Gagwell’s help, eject the engine and stop just short of a Make-A-Wish field trip at the Florida station. Cal turns out to be alive.
Tess (Ginger Minj) and DeeDee (Jujubee) are best friends and train stewardesses, right up until their rail line gets shut down. Unfazed, they sneak aboard the fancy Glamazonian Express posing as crew, and three first-class stewardesses upstage them at every turn. Then the brakes give out, a monster storm called Stormaganza rolls in, and the train is speeding toward Florida. At train command, Donna Dusk (Rachel Bloom) watches it all unfold while President Judy Gagwell (RuPaul) faces the cameras. Adam Shankman directs, channeling old-school David Zucker disaster spoofs. Ninety minutes, no brakes.
Anyone who can find the brakes. First class only, apparently.
