A poisoned dog with three days to live is the whole engine of Supergirl, and honestly, it’s the most relatable superhero motive in years. The problem is everything bolted around it. Kara chases a bandit named Krem across a string of planets, and each stop feels like a level in a game nobody finished designing. The tone stays gloomy, and her bond with Ruthye, the girl who wants Krem for her own reasons, never gets the emotional weight the movie keeps promising. Milly Alcock is the real find. Her Kara is cocky, messy and a little reckless, spending her birthday hopping across the galaxy while Superman keeps calling to check on her, and she has more personality than the script knows what to do with. Jason Momoa pops in as Lobo for a few loud minutes. It made $126.5 million worldwide on a reported $170 to $186 million. A 4.2 because Alcock can fly and the movie can’t. $54.18 says you give your dog an extra-long belly rub tonight, and the dog has no idea why.
What works: Milly Alcock gives Kara real swagger and a scrappy, funny edge, and saving Krypto is a simple, sweet reason to care.
What doesn’t: The planet-hopping plot is flat and repetitive, the tone is oddly gloomy, and the friendship with Ruthye never finds real emotional depth.
Who it’s for: Dog people and DC fans who want to see Milly Alcock’s Kara before the bigger crossovers arrive.
With Lobo’s help, Supergirl beats the Brigands, frees their captives and talks Ruthye out of taking revenge, then deals with Krem herself. She gets the antidote to Krypto in time and tells Superman that Earth is finally home.
Kara Zor-El (Milly Alcock) made it out of Krypton, landed on Earth, and had her cousin Superman (David Corenswet) show her the ropes. These days she spends her birthdays hopping around the galaxy instead of settling down. Her twenty-third goes badly. A bandit called Krem of the Yellow Hills (Matthias Schoenaerts) steals her ship and poisons her dog Krypto. Krypto has three days, and Krem has the antidote. So Kara teams up with Ruthye Marye Knoll (Eve Ridley), who has her own reasons to hunt Krem down. Craig Gillespie directs. One hundred eight minutes, one very good dog on the line.
Anyone who would cross a galaxy for their dog. So, everyone.
