There are so many extra heroes, monsters and subplots in Superman that the guy in the cape sometimes feels like a guest star in his own reboot. Nathan Fillion’s Green Lantern is pure ego with a ring. There’s a kaiju, a pocket universe and a war between two made-up countries, all crammed into 129 minutes. And yet. David Corenswet nails the part everyone else forgets: Superman is a big earnest dork who stops mid-fight to save one little squirrel and means it. Nicholas Hoult plays Lex like a tech bro whose whole personality is jealousy, which is the correct reading. Rachel Brosnahan’s Lois interviews her own boyfriend like she’s trying to get him fired. Then there’s Krypto, a dog with zero discipline who steals every scene he’s in. A 7.2 because the heart is perfect and the plot is a junk drawer. It pulled $618.7 million worldwide on a reported $225 million budget, so expect more junk drawers. $2,593 says you look at your own dog afterward and feel a little let down that it can’t fly.
What works: David Corenswet plays Superman as a sincere, slightly goofy good guy, and Krypto is the best chaos agent in any superhero movie.
What doesn’t: The plot crams in a war, a kaiju, a pocket universe and a whole side team, so Superman gets squeezed out of his own story.
Who it’s for: People who like their Superman hopeful and a little corny, plus anyone who has ever been embarrassed by their dog in public.
Lex restores the damaged half of the message from Superman’s birth parents, which reveals they sent him to rule Earth, and the public turns on him. Superman decides the Kents raised him and Krypton doesn’t get a vote, beats Lex’s plan with help from the Justice Gang, and Lex ends up behind bars.
Superman (David Corenswet) has been on the job for three years, and today he just lost a fight for the first time. He crash-lands in the Antarctic snow and whistles for Krypto, a superpowered dog who is very loyal and very badly behaved. Back in Metropolis, Superman is in trouble for stopping one country from invading another without asking anyone first, and billionaire Lex Luthor (Nicholas Hoult) is using the moment to turn the world against him. Lois Lane (Rachel Brosnahan), his girlfriend and his toughest interviewer, has questions too. James Gunn directs. One hundred twenty-nine minutes, one very good dog.
Anyone who believes kindness is still cool. Dogs welcome, even the badly behaved ones.
