Full disclosure: this is a listening party with a ticket price, and it plays the same music video twice. You get 89 minutes of Taylor Swift’s twelfth album on a big screen, built around the video for The Fate of Ophelia, plus making-of clips from the set. Between setups Taylor bakes sourdough and asks the crew for one more take, which is the most relatable a pop superstar has ever looked. The rest of the album shows up as lyric videos over kaleidoscope photos while Taylor talks you through each song. The nearest thing to a concert is a quick look at Sabrina Carpenter’s opening set from the Eras Tour. Some critics called it a rushed cash-in, and they aren’t wrong. Fans handed it an A+ CinemaScore and $34.1 million domestic anyway, and one critic compared the mood in the room to church. A 5.2 because the party is fun and the movie is thin. $428 says you try baking sourdough this month and give up before the starter does.
What works: The Fate of Ophelia video looks great on a big screen, and the behind-the-scenes clips show how much work goes into it.
What doesn’t: Most of the runtime is lyric videos over photos, so it feels rushed and thin as an actual movie.
Who it’s for: Swifties who wanted to hear the new album first with a theater full of people who know every word.
The biggest surprise is the structure: The Fate of Ophelia video plays a second time, and the title track arrives right after Sabrina Carpenter’s Eras Tour opening set.
No plot here, just a party. Taylor Swift (as herself) hosts a big-screen launch for her twelfth album, The Life of a Showgirl, opening in theaters the same day the record came out. The headliner is the "Fate of Ophelia" music video, played twice, with behind-the-scenes footage from the shoot, including Swift baking sourdough between takes. Every other track gets a lyric video over kaleidoscope-style photos, plus Taylor's own commentary. A clip of Sabrina Carpenter opening an Eras Tour show leads into the title track. Clean versions only, so the whole family is invited. Swift directs. Eighty-nine minutes, zero skips.
Every Swiftie with a stack of friendship bracelets and a free afternoon.
