Rimuru Tempest is a demon lord who runs a whole nation, and he still spends half this movie on vacation, which tells you how much is really at stake. Tears of the Azure Sea is built to connect the show’s third and fourth seasons, so nothing that happens here can change much, and if you haven’t kept up with those seasons, you’ll be lost early. The story is simple. Yura, a woman from the underwater Kingdom of Kaien, runs off with the Dragon’s Fang, a magic flute that controls a giant water dragon, and a scheming minister wants it back to aim that dragon at the surface world. The best choice is handing the spotlight to Gobta, the goofy hobgoblin, who teams up with Yura and gets the closest thing to a real arc. The water dragon fights are big and splashy. The rest feels like a long episode. A 5.0 because it’s pleasant, pretty and weightless. $1,582 says you finish it and immediately look up when the next season drops.
What works: Gobta finally gets a spotlight, and the water dragon battles look big and splashy.
What doesn’t: Because it’s a bridge between seasons, nothing here can really change, and newcomers get almost no help keeping track of who anyone is.
Who it’s for: Slime fans who’ve watched every season and want one more hangout with Rimuru’s crew.
Zodon, the minister’s own henchman, turns out to be the real villain, and Gobta snaps Yura out of his trance before Rimuru ends the fight with an attack from the sky. Yura reveals she is the water dragon’s core and dissolves into bubbles, and a post-credits scene shows a baby water dragon hatching on the shore.
Deep in the underwater Kingdom of Kaien, a priestess named Yura (Saori Ōnishi) runs off with the Dragon's Fang, a magic flute that can control a giant water dragon. Up top, Rimuru Tempest (Miho Okasaki), demon lord and the most laid-back slime alive, takes the crew on a vacation to a private island resort, courtesy of the Celestial Emperor Elmesia. Yura turns up on that island, teams up with the hobgoblin Gobta (Asuna Tomari), and fights off the men sent to drag the flute back. Somebody in Kaien wants that dragon awake. Yasuhito Kikuchi directs. One hundred five minutes, no lifeguard on duty.
Anyone who can swim, fight and keep track of a flute. Slimes welcome.
