A tank falls out of the sky, and the A-Team tries to steer it by firing the cannon. That’s the moment you find out whether this movie is for you. Joe Carnahan takes the old TV show’s love of ridiculous plans and cranks it past anything physics would sign off on. Liam Neeson’s Hannibal is all calm confidence, Bradley Cooper’s Face is pure smirk, and Rampage Jackson gives B.A. a big, soft heart under the scowl. Sharlto Copley steals the movie as Murdock, a pilot who switches accents mid-sentence and flies like he wants you to scream. The problem is the plot, a knot of double crosses over stolen printing plates that gets harder to follow the more it explains itself. The action is chopped into confetti. It made $177.2 million worldwide on a reported $100 to $110M. A 5.8 because the four leads are a riot and the story is a tangle of paperwork. $262 says you nail a tricky parallel park this week and announce that you love it when a plan comes together.
What works: The four leads have easy chemistry, and Sharlto Copley’s unhinged Murdock gets the biggest laughs.
What doesn’t: The double-cross plot is a tangle, the action is edited so fast it’s hard to follow, and Jessica Biel is wasted.
Who it’s for: Fans of the old show and anyone who wants a goofy team-up where the plans matter more than the logic.
Patrick Wilson’s CIA man Lynch turns out to be the one who set them up, and the team tricks him into confessing on the Long Beach docks. Even after clearing things up, the guys get arrested anyway, then break out of custody in the final scene.
Colonel John "Hannibal" Smith (Liam Neeson) lives for the moment a plan comes together, and he has the team to pull one off: smooth talker Face (Bradley Cooper), driver and muscle B.A. Baracus (Quinton "Rampage" Jackson), and pilot Murdock (Sharlto Copley), who is brilliant and completely unpredictable. Years after they first team up in Mexico, the four Army Rangers take an off-the-books job in Iraq to recover stolen printing plates for U.S. money. It goes wrong, nobody can prove the job was approved, and they end up framed and locked away. Joe Carnahan directs. One hundred eighteen minutes, a plan for every plan.
Anyone with a problem, nobody else to call, and a van. Especially the van.
