The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is three movies fighting over one Spider-Man, and all three lose. There’s a romance, a buddy story about Harry Osborn and a villain origin for Electro, plus a parents mystery and setup for a whole spinoff universe that never arrived. Jamie Foxx’s Max Dillon gets zapped, turns blue and plays every scene like he wandered in from a cartoon made by a different studio. Dane DeHaan gets barely any time to go from old friend to Goblin, so the turn means nothing. The one thing still working is Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone, who are so good together they make you mad at everything around them. That’s 142 minutes and a reported budget north of $200 million, and it plays like a trailer for sequels Sony never made. A 3.9 because the best couple in superhero movies deserved a script that wasn’t mostly franchise homework. $55.63 says you finish this and go looking for a Garfield and Stone romcom that doesn’t exist.
What works: Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone are still a great pair, and the web-slinging looks better than it did in the first one.
What doesn’t: Too many villains and setups crowd out the story, and Electro and the Goblin both get rushed origins that go nowhere.
Who it’s for: Garfield and Stone fans willing to sit through a lot of franchise planning to get to their scenes.
Peter can’t save Gwen when she falls during the clock tower fight with the Green Goblin. A grieving Peter quits for a long stretch, then puts the suit back on to face the Rhino in the final scene.
Peter Parker (Andrew Garfield) is supposed to be at his high school graduation, but first he has to stop a hijacked Oscorp truck driven by Aleksei Sytsevich (Paul Giamatti). He is also trying to keep a promise to stay away from his girlfriend, Gwen Stacy (Emma Stone), for her own safety. His childhood friend Harry Osborn (Dane DeHaan) is back in town to take over Oscorp, and lonely Oscorp engineer Max Dillon (Jamie Foxx), a huge Spider-Man fan, has a lab accident with electric eels that turns him into a walking power plant. Marc Webb directs. One hundred forty-two minutes of web slinging and bad timing.
Anyone who has ever been late to their own graduation. Peter gets it.
