Sony rebooted Spider-Man so fast the old suit was barely back on its hanger, then spent a big chunk of 136 minutes retelling an origin story moviegoers had already seen. Spider bite, Uncle Ben, the big lesson. Again. The new hook is a mystery about Peter’s parents, which the movie sets up like a huge deal and then mostly forgets. Rhys Ifans’ Lizard is a giant reptile with a vague plan, and the CGI makes him look like a rubber bath toy. But Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone have chemistry so easy it makes every scene they share feel like a different, better movie. Garfield’s Peter is twitchy and sarcastic in a way that actually feels like a teenager, and Denis Leary is a great grumpy dad as Captain Stacy. A 5.9 because the two leads are wonderful and the rest is a rerun. It still made $758.7 million worldwide, so clearly I’m outvoted. $40.04 says you skip ahead to the Peter and Gwen scenes and pretend the lizard was never invited.
What works: Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone have easy, funny chemistry, and Garfield’s nervous, sarcastic Peter feels like a real kid.
What doesn’t: It retells an origin moviegoers had already seen, and the Lizard is a bland villain with a fuzzy plan.
Who it’s for: Fans of Garfield and Stone as a couple, and anyone curious why people still argue about which Spider-Man is best.
Peter stops Connors from turning all of New York into lizards, but Captain Stacy dies in the fight and asks Peter to stay away from Gwen. Peter promises, then hints to her in the last scene that he probably won’t keep it.
Peter Parker (Andrew Garfield) is a skateboarding, camera-carrying loner at a New York high school, raised by his Uncle Ben (Martin Sheen) and Aunt May (Sally Field) ever since his parents left him with them as a kid. When he finds his dad's old briefcase, the clues point him to Oscorp and his father's former colleague, Dr. Curt Connors (Rhys Ifans), a scientist chasing a formula to regrow lost limbs. One wrong turn in a lab full of spiders later, Peter can suddenly stick to walls. His crush, Gwen Stacy (Emma Stone), happens to intern there. Marc Webb directs. One hundred thirty-six minutes, web shooters sold separately.
Anyone who got bitten by something weird and decided it was probably fine. Bring a skateboard.
