How The Breadwinner Performed
movie guru's TLDR

Ninety-nine minutes of a grown man being outsmarted by a washing machine. That’s The Breadwinner. Nate Bargatze plays Nate, the top guy at a car dealership, who has to run the house when his wife Katie lands a Shark Tank deal for her invention and flies to South Korea for two weeks. He’s overwhelmed by cooking, cleaning and three daughters, which the movie treats like breaking news. Bargatze’s befuddled dad routine works in short bursts, but stretched to feature length it’s a guy blinking at dishes. Will Forte gets the only real laughs as Keegan, a contractor so bad at his job he should be fined. Mandy Moore spends much of it away, a waste of Mandy Moore. Nate buying a horse to fix a problem at school is the one truly unhinged idea here, and the movie needed way more like it. It made $20.2 million worldwide on a reported $25M. A 3.1 because it’s harmless and almost entirely laugh-free. $805.69 says you finish one load of laundry this week and wait for a round of applause.

What works: Will Forte is funny as the hopeless contractor, and the movie is clean, gentle family viewing.

What doesn’t: The jokes are stale and half-baked, built on the tired idea that a dad can’t do housework, and Mandy Moore is barely used.

Who it’s for: Nate Bargatze fans and families who want something completely inoffensive for a quiet night in.

Spoilers

The horse, mistaken for dead while it’s just sleeping, wrecks the house, and a kicked ball brings down the contractor’s shaky roof work. Nate stages Katie’s big livestream in Conor’s house dressed up as theirs, the lie falls apart on camera, and his heartfelt apology wins over the viewers before he quits the dealership to work at Katie’s company.

The Breadwinner's Blurbs
About me:

Nate Wilcox (Nate Bargatze) is the top guy at a car dealership, and his wife Katie (Mandy Moore) runs the house and their three daughters, Gracie, Hadley and Sam. Then Katie lands a Shark Tank deal for her invention, the Star Minder, and has to fly to South Korea for two weeks to get it made. Nate takes leave to hold down the fort and immediately loses a fight with the laundry. Help arrives from a delivery guy, Peter (Martin Herlihy), and a very bad contractor, Keegan (Will Forte). Eric Appel directs. Ninety-nine minutes, zero clean dishes.

Who I'd like to meet:

Any parent who has served cereal for dinner and called it a theme night.
