A demon nun, a Crooked Man and a grumpy old ghost in an armchair all move into one council house in The Conjuring 2, which is at least two monsters too many. The nun gets shoehorned in so hard you can hear the spinoff meeting offscreen, and the Crooked Man looks like a stop-motion puppet that wandered off another set. At 134 minutes, the house has too many rooms. Enfield is the good part. James Wan makes a cramped home feel enormous after dark, and the long scene where Ed questions a possessed Janet while she sits with her back to the camera, blurry in the background, beats every jump scare in the movie. Madison Wolfe carries a demanding role. Patrick Wilson grabs a guitar and sings Elvis to the family, and it’s the warmest scene in the series. It made $322.8 million worldwide on a reported $40M. A 6.9 because the family drama works and the extra monsters are pure merch. $684.82 says an armchair creaks at home this week and you ask it politely to leave.
What works: Madison Wolfe’s committed performance, the long, blurry interview scene, and the Warrens’ warmth, especially Patrick Wilson’s Elvis singalong.
What doesn’t: At 134 minutes it overstays, and the Crooked Man and the nun feel bolted on to launch spinoffs rather than to scare you.
Who it’s for: Fans of haunted house movies with a sweet married couple at the center, as long as they can handle a long sit.
The old man’s voice was only a mask for the demon nun that has been haunting Lorraine’s visions all along. Lorraine finally learns its name, Valak, and says it out loud to banish it, just in time to save Ed and Janet.
It's 1977, and paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren (Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga) are thinking about stepping back after a case that left Lorraine with visions she can't shake. Across the ocean in Enfield, north London, single mom Peggy Hodgson (Frances O'Connor) and her four kids start noticing strange things in their council house after young Janet (Madison Wolfe) plays with a homemade Ouija board. Whatever it is seems to have picked Janet. The church asks the Warrens to fly over and figure out if it's real. James Wan directs. One hundred thirty-four minutes, sleep with the lights on.
Anyone who grew up in a creaky old house. Maybe skip the Ouija board.
