Two hours and fifteen minutes is a long time to wait for a mirror to do something. The Conjuring: Last Rites is billed as the Warrens’ final case, and it’s in no hurry to get them there. It’s 1986, Ed’s heart is failing, the couple has stepped back from investigating, and their grown daughter Judy is having visions she can only calm with a rhyme her mom taught her. Meanwhile, in a crowded Pennsylvania house, the Smurl family’s new antique mirror lets in three spirits. For a long stretch the movie cuts between the two families like it’s stalling. Once the Warrens finally walk into that house, the scares work, and scene for scene they’re some of the series’ best. As a big farewell, though, it underwhelms, and critics said so. It made $499.3 million worldwide on a reported $55M, so the goodbye paid off. A 5.2 because the scares land and the setup drags. $1,559 says you throw a towel over the mirror in your guest room tonight and don’t tell anybody why.
What works: Once the Warrens get to the Smurl house, the scares are sharp and the old-school haunted house mood is back.
What doesn’t: The first half drags as it cuts between two families, and as a final chapter it never feels as big as it should.
Who it’s for: Conjuring fans who want one more case with Ed and Lorraine and can handle a slow start.
The demon in the mirror is the same one from the Warrens’ very first case, and it has been after Judy all along. Ed and Lorraine pray together and the mirror shatters, and the movie ends with Ed walking Judy down the aisle at her wedding to Tony.
It's 1986, and Ed (Patrick Wilson) and Lorraine Warren (Vera Farmiga) are supposed to be retired. Ed's heart isn't what it used to be, their lectures are playing to empty seats, and their grown daughter Judy (Mia Tomlinson) is having visions of her own while her boyfriend Tony (Ben Hardy) tries to keep up. Over in West Pittston, Pennsylvania, the Smurl family, led by Jack (Elliot Cowan) and Janet (Rebecca Calder), receives an antique mirror as a gift, and their house stops feeling like home almost right away. Michael Chaves directs. One hundred thirty-five minutes, one mirror nobody should keep.
Anyone with a good priest on speed dial. Leave the mirror at the curb.
