Robin Hood is a grumpy old man full of regrets in this one, and the movie spends half its runtime proving he earned every one. Michael Sarnoski strips the legend down to the bone. Hugh Jackman’s Robin lives alone in the wild in 1247, waves off the heroic stories, and gets dragged on one more violent errand by Little John, and that stretch is grim to the point of tedious. It gets much better once a badly wounded Robin lands at a remote island priory. Jodie Comer is terrific as Sister Brigid, the prioress who nurses him, and the scenes of Robin teaching a frightened girl named Margaret to hunt have real warmth. Jackman is all weary eyes and creaky bones, and he’s very good. Bill Skarsgård makes Little John a scary friend to have. It made $9.9 million worldwide on a reported $20M. A 5.9 because the back half is moving and the front half is a slog. $4.79 says you queue up the cartoon with the fox in the green hat afterward, purely for emotional recovery.
What works: Jackman and Comer are excellent, and the priory half, with Robin teaching young Margaret to hunt, has real warmth.
What doesn’t: The first half is so relentlessly grim and violent that it turns tedious, and the brooding tone never lets up.
Who it’s for: Viewers who like their legends muddy and their heroes full of regret, and who don’t need a single laugh.
The leper who helps run the priory turns out to be Guy of Gisbourne, and Robin later learns Brigid’s own family were among his victims. Robin dies at the priory, and his last act is telling Margaret the heroic version of his life while guiding her first arrow.
England, 1247. Robin Hood (Hugh Jackman) is old now, living alone out in the wild, haunted by his outlaw years and rolling his eyes at the legends people tell about him. The folk hero stuff? He wants no part of it. Then his oldest friend, Little John (Bill Skarsgård), turns up with grim news about the old crew and a favor to ask: help him reclaim the farm he lost, plus his wife Margaret, from the people who now live there. So the two set off on one more trip together. Michael Sarnoski writes and directs. One hundred twenty-two minutes, no tights.
Anyone who thinks legends retire quietly. They don't.
