Laid off by text message in the middle of an awards ceremony: that’s how Andy Sachs comes back into our lives, and it’s the most honest scene in The Devil Wears Prada 2. Everything after it is a fantasy where print media gets saved by one good interview and a rich enough patron. The jabs at clickbait and short videos are soft, and the business plot is a lot of people in fabulous coats talking about acquisitions. The cast makes it a party anyway. Meryl Streep plays a Miranda softened by HR complaints, still lethal with a pause, now a little lost in a world that doesn’t read her magazine. Emily Blunt is the comic engine, working for Dior and delighted to make Andy squirm. Anne Hathaway makes grown-up Andy easy to root for. It made $693.5 million worldwide on a reported $100M. A 6.1 because hanging out with this crew is a treat and the story is strictly last season. $3,363 says you peek at your work chat on Saturday just to confirm you still have a job.
What works: Meryl Streep and Emily Blunt are a blast, Anne Hathaway is easy to root for, and the fashion is a feast.
What doesn’t: The media satire is soft and inconsistent, and the plan to save Runway plays like pure wish fulfillment.
Who it’s for: Fans of the original who want two more hours with Miranda, Andy, Emily and Nigel, plus anyone who has watched their industry shrink.
Andy talks Sasha Barnes into buying all of Elias-Clarke, which blocks Benji’s plan to replace the staff with AI and gets Miranda her promotion. Miranda tells Andy to go ahead and write the tell-all book, and Andy makes peace with Emily and Peter.
Twenty years after walking out on Runway, Andy Sachs (Anne Hathaway) is a respected journalist in New York, right up until her entire newsroom gets laid off by text in the middle of an awards show. Meanwhile, Miranda Priestly (Meryl Streep) is taking heat for a glowing feature on a brand tied to sweatshop labor. Company owner Irv Ravitz (Tibor Feldman) needs credibility fast, so he quietly hires Andy back as features editor. Nigel (Stanley Tucci) is still there. Emily (Emily Blunt) is at Dior now. David Frankel directs. One hundred nineteen minutes, cerulean forever.
Anyone who still thinks it is just a blue sweater. Miranda would like a word.
