Never play a game of worst confessions a week before your own wedding. In The Drama, Emma’s confession is so heavy that the movie spends the rest of its 105 minutes wobbling under it. Kristoffer Borgli wants an awkward comedy and a serious drama at once, and the script doesn’t give either side enough room to grow. It picks a subject far bigger than its jokes can carry, and it never fully earns it. What holds it together is the acting. Zendaya makes Emma guarded and layered, someone who has spent years trying to be better, and Robert Pattinson is terrific as Charlie, a sweet, anxious guy whose doubts slowly eat him alive. Their first meeting at a Boston café, where she doesn’t hear his pickup line because she’s deaf in one ear, is lovely. It made $134.7 million worldwide on a reported $28M. A 6.6 because the leads are excellent and the movie is braver than it is wise. $89.98 says the next time someone at a party suggests sharing secrets, you volunteer for a snack run.
What works: Zendaya and Robert Pattinson give two of their best performances, and the uneasy mix of comedy and dread is genuinely gripping.
What doesn’t: The script takes on a very serious subject without the depth or care it needs, and the story loses momentum after the big reveal.
Who it’s for: Grown-ups who like uncomfortable relationship dramas and want to argue about the ending afterward.
Emma’s confession is about a dark plan she made as a lonely, bullied teenager and walked away from, and she has spent her adult life working to make sure nobody else goes down that road. The wedding falls apart during a disastrous round of speeches, and the film ends with Emma and Charlie at their favorite diner, introducing themselves again like strangers.
In Boston, Charlie Thompson (Robert Pattinson) tries to talk to Emma Harwood (Zendaya) at a café, and she seems to ignore him completely. Turns out she is deaf in one ear and just didn't hear him, so she lets him try again. Two years later, the wedding is a week away. During a night with their friends Rachel (Alana Haim) and Mike (Mamoudou Athie), the group starts trading confessions about the worst things they have ever done. Emma's is not small. Suddenly Charlie is wondering who he is marrying. Kristoffer Borgli directs. One hundred five minutes, cold feet included.
Anyone with cold feet and a plus-one. Maybe skip the truth games.
