How The End of Oak Street Performed
movie guru's TLDR

A whole Michigan street wakes up millions of years in the past, and the dinosaurs are barely scarier than the Platt family’s dinner table. Denise is quietly thinking about divorce, Greg is hiding that his only job is delivering pizza, and David Robert Mitchell builds the movie on those secrets. That’s the smart part. The weak part is what people do once the dinosaurs show up, wandering outside and making choices that only make sense because the plot needs them there. It also borrows so heavily from 1980s Spielberg that it sometimes feels like a cover band. But when it rolls, it rolls. The creature effects are excellent, the chases are fast, and Anne Hathaway and Ewan McGregor play a worn-out married couple finding each other again under pressure with real warmth. It made $121.6 million worldwide on a reported $80 to $92 million. A 6.9 because the thrills are real and so are the plot holes. $10.98 says the next headline about solar flares sends you to the window to check for a long-necked neighbor.

What works: The dinosaur effects and chases are thrilling, and Anne Hathaway and Ewan McGregor give the family drama real weight.

What doesn’t: The characters make baffling choices to keep the plot moving, and the Spielberg borrowing sometimes feels more like copying than tribute.

Who it’s for: Anyone who grew up on 1980s adventure movies and still wants dinosaurs in the backyard.

Spoilers

Greg dies defending the family, but Denise and the kids escape through a wormhole to about 20 minutes before the disaster, warn the neighbors and find Greg alive. Two years later, Denise is a local hero, her book has paid off nicely, and there are two Jeannettes at the neighborhood barbecue.

The End of Oak Street's Blurbs
About me:

Flowervale, Michigan, July 1982. Denise Platt (Anne Hathaway) wants to write novels and is quietly thinking about divorce. Her husband Greg (Ewan McGregor) is hiding the fact that he lost his job. Their kids Audrey (Maisy Stella) and Brian (Christian Convery) are doing their own thing, and Starbuck the dog is just happy to be there. Then strange things pile up: a plant a librarian says went extinct, odd droppings in a neighbor's yard, news full of solar flares. One stormy night a blinding light swallows the block. By morning, the view out the window is a lot older. David Robert Mitchell directs. Ninety-nine minutes, nobody is getting the mail.

Who I'd like to meet:

Anyone handy with a flashlight and a map of the neighborhood. It has changed a little.
