Ryan Gosling sobbing along to a Taylor Swift song behind the wheel is the most honest stunt in The Fall Guy. The rest is a love letter to stunt work wrapped around a mystery that barely holds together. Gosling plays Colt, a stuntman with a busted back and a broken heart, as a goofy, good-natured guy who keeps getting thrown into things. Emily Blunt is a blast as Jody, a first-time director who works out her feelings by making him redo a fire stunt again and again. Their megaphone banter is the best rom-com bit. The action is the point: the car flips, falls and fire gags look tactile, and you can feel how much the crew loves this stuff. What drags is the missing movie star plot, stretched across 126 minutes. It made $181.1 million worldwide on a reported $125M to $150M. A 7.1 because the stunts and the leads carry a flimsy whodunit. $1,424 says you play a breakup song in a parked car this month and tell yourself you’re just testing the speakers.
What works: Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt are charming together, and the stunts celebrate the people who usually go uncredited.
What doesn’t: The mystery about the missing star is thin and predictable, and the movie runs too long for such a light story.
Who it’s for: Action fans who love seeing how stunts are pulled off, and anyone who wants a rom-com with explosions.
Tom Ryder is hiding a deadly accident of his own, and he and Gail plan to pin it on Colt with deepfake video of Colt’s face. Colt and Jody turn the big finale stunt into a trap that catches Tom’s confession on camera, and both of them are caught.
Colt Seavers (Ryan Gosling) is the go-to stunt double for movie star Tom Ryder (Aaron Taylor-Johnson), until a stunt goes badly wrong and breaks his back. He walks away from the business and from the camera operator he was dating, Jody Moreno (Emily Blunt). Eighteen months later he is parking cars at a restaurant when producer Gail Meyer (Hannah Waddingham) calls: Jody is directing her first movie, a space epic shooting in Sydney, and she wants Colt. Except she does not, and Tom has gone missing. Gail needs him found before the whole production shuts down. David Leitch directs. One hundred twenty-six minutes, every fall on purpose.
Anyone who cries to Taylor Swift in the car. Colt understands.
