A movie.guru score of 3.3 is a hard landing for a film this sincere. The Firing Squad follows three Australian men convicted of smuggling and waiting on death row in Indonesia, where the one comfort left to them is their Christian faith. Writer and director Timothy A. Chey treats it as a story about grace rather than a prison thriller. James Barrington plays Peter Lone, Cuba Gooding Jr. plays Samuel Wilson and Kevin Sorbo plays Pastor Lynbrook, with Eric Roberts as Adam Markman. It premiered at a convention of religious broadcasters, and it’s clearly made first for viewers who share its faith. That’s a real audience, but the film rarely reaches past it, and viewers overall were lukewarm, with a 5.0 on IMDb. A 4.4 because the conviction is real and the reach is narrow. $7,846 says you think of someone who could use a visit, and you actually go see them this month.
What works: It takes the men’s faith seriously and frames a grim situation as a story about grace and hope rather than a thriller.
What doesn’t: It’s built for audiences who already share its faith, and viewers outside that circle rated it low.
Who it’s for: Church groups and viewers who look for faith-centered dramas about redemption in the hardest places.
There’s no big twist to spoil. The film’s question is less whether the men escape their sentence than how they face it, and its answer is faith.
Three Australian men caught smuggling drugs now face execution in Indonesia. The walls are high, the clock is running, and the only direction left to look is up. Inside, they find comfort in their Christian faith. Timothy A. Chey writes and directs. The cast includes Peter Lone (James Barrington), Pastor Lynbrook (Kevin Sorbo) and Samuel Wilson (Cuba Gooding Jr.), with Liu Fat (Edmund Kwan) and Adam Markman (Eric Roberts). It's a heavy subject, handled as a story about grace and hope. Ninety-three minutes, steady faith in the hardest place.
Anyone who needs hope in a hard place. Pull up a chair.
