The Fix runs 141 minutes on a premise that sounds like a story someone tells at a bar: an old spy with a failing memory lets slip that he hid $25 million in a hotel wall in Tehran during the 1981 embassy crisis, and his former protégé decides to go get it. That’s a fun hook for a lean caper. This isn’t lean. Zachary Levi plays Tucker, who rounds up his old squad for a rogue, very unofficial trip into Iran, and Liam Neeson plays Larry, the mentor whose slips set the whole thing off. Neeson as a man whose memory is fading is the most interesting idea on the table. Critics were rough, with a 19% on Rotten Tomatoes, though the audiences who showed up gave it a B CinemaScore. A 3.0 because a tight caper got buried under more than two hours of runtime. $901 says you check behind a loose wall panel at home this week, just to be sure.
What works: The hook, an old spy’s slipping memory leading to buried cash, is a genuinely fun setup.
What doesn’t: At 141 minutes it’s far too long for a caper this simple, and critics found little to like beyond the premise.
Who it’s for: Liam Neeson and Zachary Levi fans who’ll watch any heist with a ticking clock.
The heist turns into a rescue: the team finds a group of women who need to get out of the country, including a journalist and photographer named Maryam, and has to choose between the $25 million and getting them out.
Tucker (Zachary Levi) reconnects with his old agency mentor Larry (Liam Neeson), whose memory is failing and who keeps letting classified details from his overseas years slip. One slip is enormous: during the embassy crisis of 1981, Larry stashed $25 million behind the wall of a Tehran hotel. Tucker sees a payday, pulls his old squad back together and plans a rogue, very unofficial trip into Iran to grab it. Getting in is one thing. Getting the cash out is another. Guy Moshe directs, from an idea by a former CIA officer. One hundred forty-one minutes, cash in the walls.
Anyone handy with drywall and a cover story. Keep it quiet.
