How The Garfield Movie Performed
movie guru's TLDR

Garfield hops a freight train, cases a dairy farm and stages a rescue at a canyon bridge in The Garfield Movie, which is a strange way to honor a cat whose whole brand is the couch. The heist plot asks the laziest cat in comics to be an action hero, and the costume doesn’t fit. Garfield and Odie get snatched by a Shar Pei and a Whippet, rescued by Vic, the street cat dad Garfield never forgave, and drafted into a milk heist for Jinx, a white Persian with a grudge. Chris Pratt voices Garfield, Samuel L. Jackson voices Vic, and the new face is Otto, a Highland bull who lost his job as the farm mascot and misses his girlfriend Ethel. The father-son story is surprisingly tender. The animation looks flat and oddly empty, though, and the jokes run thin. It made $257 million worldwide anyway. A 3.8 because kids will giggle and fans of the comic will sigh. $46.44 says you order lasagna before the credits and claim the kids picked it.

What works: The father-son story between Garfield and Vic is surprisingly tender, and little kids will enjoy the slapstick.

What doesn’t: Turning Garfield into a heist hero erases the grumpy couch cat fans love, and the animation looks flat and half-empty.

Who it’s for: Little kids who think a cat riding a freight train is the funniest thing they have ever seen.

Spoilers

Vic reveals he let Jon adopt baby Garfield on purpose, figuring Jon would take better care of him. Roland and Nolan turn on Jinx at the canyon bridge, she ends up doing community service, and Vic moves in with Garfield, Odie and Jon.

The Garfield Movie's Blurbs
About me:

Garfield (Chris Pratt) has life figured out: lasagna, naps, and an owner, Jon (Nicholas Hoult), who does all the work. Then he and Odie (Harvey Guillén) get snatched by two goons, Roland (Brett Goldstein) and Nolan (Bowen Yang), and hauled off to an abandoned mall. The rescue comes from Vic (Samuel L. Jackson), the dad Garfield hasn't forgiven since kittenhood. Then Jinx (Hannah Waddingham), a Persian cat with a long memory, offers Vic a deal: pull off a giant milk heist at Lactose Farms, or else. Mark Dindal directs. One hundred one minutes, and somehow it's still Monday.

Who I'd like to meet:

Anyone with a fully stocked fridge. Lasagna preferred, Mondays not accepted.
