Hugh Grant spends this whole movie pitching it to Charlie Hunnam like a screenplay, which is either clever or Guy Ritchie admitting he knows you’ve seen this before. You have. Posh crooks, nicknames, flashbacks that rewind to correct themselves, a guy called Dry Eye. Then it gets fun anyway. Matthew McConaughey glides through it like he’s selling luxury cars to royalty. Hunnam’s Ray is the calmest man in London and the best thing in the movie, until Colin Farrell shows up in a plaid tracksuit as a boxing coach who keeps getting dragged into crimes he never signed up for. Some of the insult humor lands like a dropped tray. Critics were split, a 51 on Metacritic and 75% on Rotten Tomatoes, while audiences ate it up. It made $126 million worldwide on a reported $22 million budget. A 7.1 because it’s familiar and smug and genuinely entertaining anyway. $1,666 says you buy a tracksuit within a month and call it fashion.
What works: Charlie Hunnam’s unflappable Ray, Hugh Grant’s oily narrator and Colin Farrell’s tracksuit coach keep the twists fun.
What doesn’t: It’s Guy Ritchie running his greatest hits again, and some of the insult comedy lands badly instead of sharp.
Who it’s for: Fans of British crime capers who like their gangsters in tweed and their plots told out of order.
Billionaire buyer Matthew Berger was quietly working with Dry Eye to knock down Mickey’s price, and Mickey figures it out and makes him pay for it. Fletcher’s blackmail plan collapses when Ray turns the tables on him before he can cash in.
Mickey Pearson (Matthew McConaughey) is an American who went to Oxford and built an illegal cannabis empire hidden on the country estates of broke English aristocrats. Now he wants out. He plans to sell the whole operation to billionaire Matthew Berger (Jeremy Strong) and settle down with his wife Rosalind (Michelle Dockery). Word gets around, and a young gangster called Dry Eye (Henry Golding) wants in too. Meanwhile a sleazy private eye named Fletcher (Hugh Grant) turns up at the house of Mickey's right-hand man Ray (Charlie Hunnam) with a story to pitch and a price tag. Guy Ritchie directs. One hundred thirteen minutes, very fancy accents.
Screenwriters with a juicy pitch. Ray will hear you out, briefly.
