How The Grand Budapest Hotel Performed
movie guru's TLDR

Wes Anderson made a movie about a murder, a jailbreak and a country sliding toward war, then frosted the whole thing pink like a bakery box. That’s the trick, and it’s also the catch. Everything is so centered and so tightly timed that some big names barely register. Jeff Goldblum and Harvey Keitel show up, land a bit, and get wheeled back out like expensive furniture. Then there’s Ralph Fiennes. His Monsieur Gustave is a fussy, perfumed poet who’d also take a punch for you, and he’s the funniest he’s ever been on screen. Tony Revolori’s Zero plays it totally straight, which is the only reason the jokes land. Willem Dafoe as a hitman in a leather coat is pure nightmare fuel inside a candy shop. 99 minutes, nothing wasted, and a movie.guru score of 9.5 it legit earned. An 8.9 because the dollhouse looks perfect and only lets you feel so much until the very end. $903 says you pause on a random frame just to check if it’s really that symmetrical.

What works: Ralph Fiennes in full comic overdrive, plus a jailbreak and a snowy chase that run like clockwork.

What doesn’t: The cast is so stacked that several famous faces get one scene and no real character, and all that precision can feel chilly.

Who it’s for: People who sort their bookshelf by color and still want a movie with a little ache hidden inside it.

Spoilers

Gustave is cleared and inherits Madame D.’s fortune, but he later dies after standing up for Zero against soldiers on a train, told in one quiet line of narration. Zero ends up owning the hotel and keeps it running because it reminds him of Agatha, who died young.

The Grand Budapest Hotel's Blurbs
About me:

In the made-up European country of Zubrowka, 1932, the pink Grand Budapest Hotel runs like clockwork under its concierge, Monsieur Gustave H. (Ralph Fiennes), who wears a lot of cologne and remembers every guest. He takes a new lobby boy, Zero Moustafa (Tony Revolori), under his wing. Then one of Gustave's most devoted regulars, the elderly Madame D. (Tilda Swinton), names him in her will with a priceless painting, and her son Dmitri (Adrien Brody) is very much not okay with it. Decades later, an older Zero (F. Murray Abraham) tells the story. Wes Anderson directs. One hundred minutes, perfectly centered.

Who I'd like to meet:

Anyone who appreciates a well-pressed uniform and a pink pastry box.
