A reported $200M, the Russo brothers and three big stars, and the most memorable thing in The Gray Man is Chris Evans’s mustache. He plays Lloyd, a hired gun in pastel polos with the energy of a guy who just won his fantasy league, and he’s the only person on screen having fun. Ryan Gosling’s Six is so cool and quiet he’s basically a screensaver. Ana de Armas is sharp and underused. One sequence is a genuine blast: Six fighting his way across Prague while handcuffed to a bench, with a runaway tram and half the city’s police on his tail. Everything else is drone shots swooping so fast you can’t tell who’s punching whom, plus giant location titles splashed across the screen like a travel brochure. The plot is a flash drive and a kidnapped kid, and nobody seems to care much about either. A 4.3 because Evans is a hoot and the rest is noise in a nice jacket. $66.93 says you sit on a park bench this week and test how firmly it’s bolted down.
What works: Chris Evans is clearly having a blast as a smug villain, and the handcuffed fight across Prague is a real highlight.
What doesn’t: Gosling’s hero is a blank, the camera swoops so much the fights turn to mush, and the plot gives you no reason to care.
Who it’s for: Spy movie fans looking for something loud to half-watch on a lazy Sunday while scrolling on their phone.
Six and Lloyd settle things in a hedge maze, and before Lloyd can talk his way out, Suzanne Brewer takes him out herself to protect the agency. Fitzroy doesn’t make it, but Claire is safe, and Six is still a target when the credits roll.
Court Gentry (Ryan Gosling) was pulled out of prison by CIA handler Donald Fitzroy (Billy Bob Thornton) and turned into Sierra Six, an off-the-books operative in a secret program. On a job in Bangkok, his target hands him a drive packed with secrets about his own boss, Denny Carmichael (Regé-Jean Page). Six keeps the drive, and the agency decides he has to go. Carmichael hires Lloyd Hansen (Chris Evans), a former agent with a loud mustache and no rules, to hunt him down. Agent Dani Miranda (Ana de Armas) gets pulled in too. Anthony and Joe Russo direct. One hundred twenty-nine minutes, globe-trotting at full sprint.
Anyone with a passport and serious cardio. The itinerary is a lot.
