Imagine a detective story where the detectives are also the main suspects and none of them remember the crime. That’s The Hangover, and it’s a genius setup that Todd Phillips mostly cashes in. Some of it hasn’t aged well. Mr. Chow is one long accent joke, and every woman on screen is either a punchline or waiting by a phone for the guys to call. But Zach Galifianakis as Alan is a walking weather event, a grown man who insists his purse is a satchel and expects everybody to agree. Ed Helms keeps discovering fresh damage on his own face, and Bradley Cooper plays the only guy who thinks this is all going fine. It made $469.3 million worldwide on a reported $35 million budget, which is nuts for a movie about a missing groom and a stolen tiger. A 7.9 because the mystery is tight, the clues keep getting worse, and the big laughs still land. $4,907 says you finish it and immediately text the friend who’d be Alan.
What works: The mystery structure, Galifianakis’s total commitment as Alan, and how every new clue makes the night sound worse.
What doesn’t: Mr. Chow is built on an accent gag, and the women in the movie get almost nothing to do except wait or react.
Who it’s for: Anyone planning a bachelor party, and every friend group with that one guy nobody can fully explain.

Doug was stuck on the hotel roof the entire time, locked out after the night’s chaos, and a mattress hanging on a statue is the clue that cracks it. They make the wedding just in time, and Alan finds a camera full of photos from the night that they agree to look at once and then delete.
Doug (Justin Bartha) is getting married in two days, so his buddies Phil (Bradley Cooper) and Stu (Ed Helms), plus his soon-to-be brother-in-law Alan (Zach Galifianakis), take him to Las Vegas for one last wild night. The next morning, the guys wake up in a wrecked suite at Caesars Palace with no memory of anything. There is a tiger in the bathroom, a baby in the closet, and Stu is missing a tooth. Doug is just missing. Todd Phillips directs. One hundred minutes, zero memories.
Anyone who has seen Doug. Call Phil. Do not call the bride.
