The Hangover Part III drops the one thing that made the first one work: nobody wakes up confused. There’s no missing night, no puzzle, no trail of clues to retrace. Instead it’s a gloomy crime caper where the guys chase Leslie Chow from Tijuana to Las Vegas for an angry gangster, and the laughs are rare enough to count on one hand. Ken Jeong gets way more screen time, and Chow works best in small doses. The script gives Bradley Cooper and Ed Helms little to do besides look worried. John Goodman plays the gangster with real menace, which is a strange thing to bring to a comedy. Zach Galifianakis gets the one sweet streak, a pawn shop meet-cute with Melissa McCarthy that’s funnier than everything around it. Critics gave it 21% on Rotten Tomatoes, and it still made $362 million worldwide. A 2.8 because it forgot it was supposed to be funny. $477 says you forget this one exists by Friday, then remember it during a pawn shop commercial.
What works: The pawn shop scene with Melissa McCarthy is genuinely sweet and funny, and John Goodman brings real weight.
What doesn’t: There’s no mystery, very few jokes and way too much Chow, so it plays like a grim crime movie.
Who it’s for: Completists who need to finish the trilogy and won’t mind a sequel that barely tries to be funny.
Chow turns on Marshall, the guys get Doug back safe, and Alan marries Cassie. A scene after the credits finally returns to the old formula: one more wild night that nobody can remember.
Alan (Zach Galifianakis) is completely out of control, so his family stages an intervention, and Phil (Bradley Cooper), Stu (Ed Helms) and Doug (Justin Bartha) agree to drive him to a treatment center in Arizona. On the way, their minivan gets run off the road by a crime boss named Marshall (John Goodman). He's furious at Leslie Chow (Ken Jeong), who just broke out of a prison in Thailand and took off with a fortune in gold that Marshall says is his. Marshall keeps Doug as insurance and gives the rest three days to find Chow. Todd Phillips directs. One hundred minutes, and this time they remember everything.
Anyone who knows where Leslie Chow is. Doug would really appreciate it.
