The problem shows up early: a movie about Black maids in 1963 Mississippi keeps steering back to the young white woman writing their stories down. Skeeter gets the big arc and the hopeful send-off, and that’s a real flaw, not a small one. The film also sands down how dangerous it was to speak up back then, so some scenes play more like a cozy Sunday matinee than they should. And still, Viola Davis is incredible. Her Aibileen holds years of grief behind a calm face, and when she finally lets it show, the room goes quiet. Octavia Spencer’s Minny is sharp, funny and fierce, and Jessica Chastain is a surprise bright spot as Celia, the outsider nobody invites anywhere. Bryce Dallas Howard plays Hilly as a villain you’ll want to boo out loud. An A+ CinemaScore says audiences adored it. A 6.7 because the performances are better than the frame built around them. $16.23 says you look up the rest of Viola Davis’s movies before the credits are done.
What works: Viola Davis and Octavia Spencer give the movie its heart, and Jessica Chastain’s warm, funny Celia is a bonus.
What doesn’t: It centers the white writer’s journey over the maids whose story it is, and it softens the real danger of that era.
Who it’s for: Viewers who want a big, emotional drama about friendship and courage and don’t mind a polished Hollywood take on history.
Skeeter’s book comes out anonymously, and Minny’s story about the pie she served Hilly keeps Hilly quiet, because exposing the writers would mean admitting the pie story is about her. Hilly still gets Aibileen fired over a made-up theft, and the movie ends with Aibileen walking away from the house, ready to become a writer herself.
Jackson, Mississippi, 1963. Skeeter Phelan (Emma Stone) comes home from college wanting to be a writer and lands a job answering letters for a housekeeping advice column. For help, she turns to Aibileen Clark (Viola Davis), a Black maid who works for one of Skeeter's friends and is raising that friend's little girl. Skeeter starts to see how the women in her social circle, led by Hilly Holbrook (Bryce Dallas Howard), treat the people who work in their homes. So she asks Aibileen and her best friend Minny Jackson (Octavia Spencer) for something risky: their real stories, for a book. Tate Taylor directs. One hundred forty-six minutes, big feelings.
Anyone brave enough to tell the truth, and anyone ready to really listen.
