You will spot the lock on the outside of Millie’s attic door, and so will everyone else in the theater. The Housemaid is an airport paperback with a movie-star budget. Millie, fresh out of prison and needing to keep a job, takes a live-in position at a Long Island mansion. A couple of the twists are visible from the driveway. It also flirts with something sharper about the picture-perfect housewife fantasy and then backs off. But Amanda Seyfried is a riot as Nina, the boss who smiles, snaps, accuses and apologizes in the same breath. Sydney Sweeney plays Millie, a woman who can’t afford to walk out no matter how weird it gets. Paul Feig directs with a wink, and the final stretch gets genuinely wild. It’s rated R and turns dark, so it’s strictly for grown-ups. It made $400.5 million worldwide on a reported $35M. A 6.0 because Seyfried is a blast and the story is proudly pulpy. $6,464 says you call one twist early, miss the bigger one, and tell everyone you saw both coming.
What works: Amanda Seyfried is wonderfully unnerving, and Paul Feig leans into the twisty, pulpy fun of an old-school thriller.
What doesn’t: Several twists are easy to spot well ahead of time, and it flirts with sharper ideas about the perfect-housewife fantasy without committing.
Who it’s for: Adults who love a pulpy page-turner and like guessing the twist before the movie gets there.
Nina isn’t the danger; her husband Andrew is, and she hired Millie hoping he would fall for her and let Nina and her daughter go. Millie and Nina turn the tables, Andrew doesn’t survive the night, and Nina leaves to start over while Millie takes a new job.
Millie Calloway (Sydney Sweeney) is fresh out on parole and needs a job, badly. So when wealthy Nina Winchester (Amanda Seyfried) hires her as a live-in maid at a Long Island mansion, Millie says yes, even though her new bedroom is in the attic and the door locks from the outside. Nina's husband Andrew (Brandon Sklenar) is kind and charming, their daughter Cece (Indiana Elle) is a handful, and Nina herself flips from sweet to impossible overnight. Paul Feig directs, adapting Freida McFadden's novel. One hundred thirty-one minutes, check the lock first.
Anyone who reads the fine print on a live-in job offer. Ask about the attic.
