How The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2 Performed
movie guru's TLDR

Three movies of buildup, and the payoff is mostly a long walk through a ruined city, with breaks to argue about whether Katniss should be walking. Snow has hidden traps all over the Capitol, which sounds thrilling and plays like a very grim game of hopscotch. The colors stay set to wet cement. Then the sewer sequence arrives, a dark, cramped chase that’s the scariest stretch of the whole series, and the movie finally wakes up. Jennifer Lawrence still makes Katniss feel human under the propaganda poster, exhausted and done with everyone using her face. Julianne Moore keeps Coin so calm it’s unsettling. Josh Hutcherson has the toughest assignment, a guy who can’t trust his own memories. The love triangle ends with more of a shrug than a choice. Fans still showed up for $684.5 million worldwide. A 5.6 because the big moments land, but there’s way too much trudging between them across 137 minutes. $51.59 says you try the four-note mockingjay whistle on a bird this week and the bird just leaves.

What works: The sewer chase is the scariest sequence in the series, and Jennifer Lawrence still plays Katniss with real anger and exhaustion.

What doesn’t: Splitting the book left this half full of slow trudging through gray streets, and the love triangle ends on a shrug.

Who it’s for: Fans who’ve come this far and need to see how Katniss’s story ends.

Spoilers

Prim is killed in a bombing Coin was behind, so at Snow’s execution Katniss turns her arrow on Coin instead. Snow dies in the chaos that follows, and the epilogue finds Katniss and Peeta years later with two kids in a quiet meadow.

The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2's Blurbs
About me:

Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence) is the face of a full-blown rebellion, and the war against President Snow (Donald Sutherland) is coming to a head. Rebel leader President Coin (Julianne Moore) would rather keep her safe and on camera, filming propaganda. Katniss would rather march on the Capitol and finish this. She joins a squad that includes Gale (Liam Hemsworth), Finnick (Sam Claflin) and a shaky Peeta (Josh Hutcherson), heading into city streets rigged with booby traps the rebels call pods. Francis Lawrence directs the final chapter. One hundred thirty-seven minutes, no more games.

Who I'd like to meet:

Anyone who volunteers. Pack light and watch your step.
