Every Scottish vowel survives Sean Connery’s turn as a Soviet submarine captain, and by the first sonar ping you stop caring. The bigger issue is how much of the 135 minutes is men in dim rooms whispering about propellers, depths and torpedo angles, and the final underwater showdown gets so tangled you’ll want a whiteboard. Everything else is a clinic in tension. John McTiernan makes a very quiet movie feel loud. Connery plays Ramius as a man three moves ahead of everyone, and the way he says almost nothing is half the fun. Alec Baldwin’s Jack Ryan is a desk guy who hates flying and keeps getting put on aircraft. Courtney B. Vance’s Jonesy, listening to the ocean like a record collector hunting a rare pressing, is the coolest guy on either sub. It made $200.5 million worldwide on a reported $30M. An 8.6 because it turns listening into an action sequence. $7,367 says you spend tonight trying to identify every hum and creak in your house like a sonar operator.
What works: Sean Connery’s quiet authority and John McTiernan’s slow-squeeze tension make a movie full of whispering play like a thriller, and the supporting crew is stacked.
What doesn’t: The technical chatter gets dense, and the final underwater fight is so busy it’s hard to tell which sub is which.
Who it’s for: People who like their thrillers smart and patient, and anyone who ever wanted to sit at a sonar station.
Ramius was defecting all along, and Ryan helps fake the sub’s destruction so the Soviet crew goes home believing it sank. A hunting Soviet sub is destroyed by its own torpedo in the finale, and Borodin doesn’t survive the voyage.
November 1984. Soviet captain Marko Ramius (Sean Connery) takes the Red October to sea, a brand-new missile submarine with a drive so quiet that sonar can barely hear it. Then the sub goes dark, and the Soviet fleet floods the Atlantic hunting for it. In Washington, CIA analyst Jack Ryan (Alec Baldwin) floats a theory nobody likes: maybe Ramius is not planning an attack at all. Admiral Greer (James Earl Jones) backs him, and Ryan races out to the USS Dallas, where Commander Mancuso (Scott Glenn) and sonar ace Jonesy (Courtney B. Vance) are listening hard. John McTiernan directs. One hundred thirty-five minutes, one ping only.
Anyone who can stay very, very quiet. Submarine rules.
