Leigh Whannell made a monster movie where the monster is mostly a camera pointed at an empty hallway. He holds on blank corners and open doorways until you start searching them yourself. Elisabeth Moss carries the whole thing. Cecilia got out of a controlling, abusive relationship, and Moss plays the fear and the exhaustion as real, never as a scream queen routine. The movie takes her seriously, which is more than anyone around her does. Aldis Hodge brings real warmth as James, the cop friend who opens his home to her. The honest problem is the last act. Once the secret is out, the quiet dread turns into a loud hallway brawl with security guards, and a few plot mechanics get waved through on vibes. It made $144.5 million worldwide on a reported $7M. An 8.1 because it takes a goofy old monster and makes it about something real. $918.93 says you see your breath on a cold morning this winter and check whether a second cloud is floating next to it.
What works: Elisabeth Moss makes Cecilia’s fear feel lived in, and Whannell turns empty rooms and still shots into the scariest thing on screen.
What doesn’t: The last act trades slow dread for a loud hallway brawl, and some of the plot mechanics don’t survive a second thought.
Who it’s for: Horror fans who prefer a held breath to a jump scare, and anyone who loves a hero nobody believes.
Adrian faked his own death and built a suit that bends light, with his brother Tom helping him. In the end Cecilia confronts Adrian at his home, turns the suit against him, and walks out free while the security footage tells a story nobody can disprove.
Cecilia Kass (Elisabeth Moss) sneaks out of her controlling partner's high-security house in the middle of the night and does not look back. Adrian Griffin (Oliver Jackson-Cohen) is a rich optics genius who does not take no for an answer. She hides out with her friend James Lanier (Aldis Hodge), a San Francisco cop, and his teenage daughter Sydney (Storm Reid). Two weeks later comes the news: Adrian is dead, and he left her a fortune. Cecilia should finally be able to breathe. Instead, every empty corner starts to feel occupied. Leigh Whannell directs. One hundred twenty-four minutes, and you will never trust an empty chair again.
Anyone who has ever felt watched in an empty room. Sit with your back to the wall.
