The rules fit on an index card, and the movie never explains why anyone wrote them. In a military-run alternate America, fifty teenage boys walk south without stopping, three warnings each, and a fourth costs your life. Only the last one still moving wins. Nobody says how this is supposed to fix the economy, and Mark Hamill’s Major, who runs the whole thing, leans closer to cartoon than threat. Then the two leads make you stop asking. Cooper Hoffman’s Ray Garraty walks with something hard and private driving him, and David Jonsson’s Pete McVries is so decent that you start dreading every mile on his behalf. Their friendship is the whole film, and it’s tender in a way you don’t expect from a Stephen King story this grim. Francis Lawrence keeps it lean at 108 minutes, and the goodbyes land hard. A 7.7 because the world is thin and the people in it are anything but. $255.09 says you stop complaining about your daily step goal, at least for a week.
What works: Cooper Hoffman and David Jonsson give soulful performances, and their friendship turns a bleak premise into something that really hurts.
What doesn’t: The world-building is paper thin, the contest’s purpose never makes sense, and Hamill’s Major tips into cartoon villain.
Who it’s for: Stephen King readers and anyone ready for a grim, emotional story about friendship under impossible pressure.
Ray and Pete are the last two walkers, and Ray chooses to stop so Pete can win. Pete uses his wish to carry out Ray’s plan against the Major, then walks away alone down a silent street.
In an alternate America run by the military, one event matters every year. Fifty teenage boys, one per state, start walking and are not allowed to stop. Dip under three miles an hour and they get a warning. A third warning means the soldiers take them out of the contest for good. The last walker left wins a fortune and one wish. Ray Garraty (Cooper Hoffman) of Maine is in, even as his mom Ginnie (Judy Greer) begs him to quit. He bonds fast with Pete McVries (David Jonsson). The Major (Mark Hamill) runs the show. Francis Lawrence directs, adapting Stephen King. One hundred eight minutes, no rest stops.
Anyone who would walk the extra mile for a friend. Here, every mile counts.
