Seven heroes is too many for 132 minutes, and The Magnificent Seven proves it: three of them get real personalities and the rest get one cool trait each. It’s a remake of a remake, and it plays like a western sampler platter: scared town, cocky gambler, showdown in the street. Peter Sarsgaard’s Bogue is a sniveling cartoon, a villain so sweaty and smug he practically comes with his own hiss track. Denzel Washington rides in all in black and makes it look effortless. Ethan Hawke is the surprise, a legendary sharpshooter who has lost his nerve. Vincent D’Onofrio plays a high-voiced, scripture-quoting mountain man and steals every scene he’s in. Chris Pratt does card tricks and grins. The final battle is loud, long and cleanly staged. It made $162.4 million worldwide on a reported $90 to $107 million. A 5.8 because the cast is fun and the movie takes no chances. $336 says you push through the next swinging door like it’s a saloon, and the only person who notices is a waiter.
What works: Denzel Washington, Ethan Hawke and Vincent D’Onofrio bring real charisma, and the final town battle is cleanly staged.
What doesn’t: Most of the seven get one trait apiece, and Peter Sarsgaard’s villain is too cartoonish to feel threatening.
Who it’s for: Western fans who want a big, old-fashioned shootout with a movie-star cast and no surprises.
Only three of the seven ride away: Chisholm, Vasquez and Red Harvest. Faraday makes one last, lit-fuse ride at the Gatling gun, Chisholm reveals that Bogue hurt his family years ago, and Emma is the one who finally brings Bogue down.
1879. Industrialist Bartholomew Bogue (Peter Sarsgaard) wants the gold under the frontier town of Rose Creek, and his hired guns make it clear the townsfolk can sell cheap or suffer. Emma Cullen (Haley Bennett) refuses to give in and rides out to hire protection. She finds bounty hunter Sam Chisholm (Denzel Washington), who signs on and starts recruiting: card sharp Joshua Faraday (Chris Pratt), sharpshooter Goodnight Robicheaux (Ethan Hawke), knife expert Billy Rocks (Byung-hun Lee), plus an outlaw, a mountain man and a Comanche warrior. Antoine Fuqua directs this remake. One hundred thirty-three minutes, seven against an army.
Anyone good with a horse and free next week. Pay is everything the town has.
