116 minutes of beautiful suits with a spy plot tucked in the inside pocket: that’s The Man from U.N.C.L.E. The plot involves a missing scientist and a bomb in the wrong hands, and you’ll forget it before the car ride home. Elizabeth Debicki gets a stunning wardrobe and almost nothing to do as the villain, and Guy Ritchie keeps chopping the action into split screens and quick montages. But the vibes are immaculate. Henry Cavill plays Napoleon Solo like a man who has never paid for his own drink, and Armie Hammer’s Illya is wound so tight you can practically hear him creak. Their bickering is the movie. The best scene has Solo sitting in a parked truck, eating a sandwich and enjoying an old Italian song while his partner gets chased through the water behind him. Alicia Vikander is quick and dry as the mechanic who keeps outmaneuvering both of them. A 6.6 because it’s all style, and it’s really good style. $613.23 says you buy a turtleneck this fall and start calling it your spy sweater.
What works: Henry Cavill and Armie Hammer’s prickly rivalry is a blast, and the sixties costumes, sets and music look fantastic.
What doesn’t: The villain plot is generic and forgettable, and the split-screen editing often skips past the action instead of showing it.
Who it’s for: Fans of old-school spy movies who’d trade a tight plot for great tailoring any day.
Gaby turns out to be a British agent reporting to Waverly. After the bomb is stopped, Solo and Illya each admit they were ordered to take the scientist’s research and eliminate the other, so they burn the disk together, and Waverly names the trio his new team, U.N.C.L.E.
Berlin, 1963. Napoleon Solo (Henry Cavill), a smooth CIA agent with a past as a high-end thief, sneaks car mechanic Gaby Teller (Alicia Vikander) out of East Berlin. Her missing father is a nuclear scientist, and the wealthy Vinciguerras, especially the icy Victoria (Elizabeth Debicki), want him building them a bomb. To stop it, Solo has to team up with Illya Kuryakin (Armie Hammer), the KGB giant who just spent a whole car chase trying to catch him. Guy Ritchie directs. One hundred sixteen minutes, all tailoring and bickering.
Anyone who looks good in a turtleneck and can hold a cover story.
