MusicAlejandro Amenábar. He directed it, wrote it and scored it himself.
MoviesThe Innocents (1961). Another candlelit country house, another very tense governess.

How The Others Performed
movie guru's TLDR

Heads up: The Others moves at the speed of a candle being carried down a long hallway, and some nights that’s a little too slow. A big chunk of the middle is Grace checking doors, scolding servants and insisting nothing is wrong, and if you’re not locked in, your phone starts looking pretty interesting. Stay locked in. Nicole Kidman plays Grace wound so tight she seems ready to snap at a creaky floorboard, and Fionnula Flanagan’s housekeeper smiles like she has the answers to a test you haven’t taken yet. Alakina Mann, as the daughter who won’t stop talking about a boy named Victor, is creepy in the best way. Alejandro Amenábar builds scares out of fog, curtains and silence, with zero gore. It made $210 million worldwide on a reported $17 million. A 7.8 because the slow build pays off with one of the cleanest twists in horror, and the rewatch plays like a different movie. $844 says you check behind the curtains tonight and pretend you were just fixing them.

What works: Nicole Kidman’s wound-tight performance, the candlelit atmosphere, and a twist that recasts the whole movie.

What doesn’t: The middle stretch circles the same rules and arguments, so the pace sags before the payoff.

Who it’s for: People who like their ghost stories quiet, foggy and gore-free, with a twist worth a rewatch.

Spoilers

Grace and her children are the ghosts, and the intruders are a living family who just moved in. The servants died in the house long ago, and Grace finally has to face that she and the children died there too, then decides they’re staying anyway.

The Others's Blurbs
About me:

Jersey, 1945. The war is barely over, and Grace Stewart (Nicole Kidman) runs her huge stone house like a fortress. Her kids, Anne (Alakina Mann) and Nicholas (James Bentley), have a rare condition that makes sunlight dangerous, so every curtain stays shut and no door opens until the one before it is locked. Three new servants turn up at the door looking for work, led by housekeeper Mrs. Mills (Fionnula Flanagan). Grace hires them and lays down the house rules. Then Anne starts talking about a boy named Victor who has been visiting her room. Alejandro Amenábar directs. One hundred four minutes, every lamp turned down low.

Who I'd like to meet:

Anyone who closes doors behind them. Quietly, please. The children are resting.
