The Roses is a divorce comedy that spends so long on the marriage it almost forgets to get to the war. Benedict Cumberbatch’s Theo is an architect, Olivia Colman’s Ivy is a chef, and after they move to Mendocino and raise twins, one storm wrecks his naval history museum and sends a famous food critic into her new restaurant. Her restaurant booms. His career craters. Every smile at the dinner table gets a little sharper after that. The good news is the two leads, who trade insults with surgical precision, and you could watch them bicker for hours. The bad news is the tone, stuck between broad jokes and a nastier satire, so neither fully lands, and the bite of the earlier film version gets dulled. It made $52.0 million worldwide on a reported $30M. A 5.9 because Colman and Cumberbatch are a treat in a movie that plays it safe. $923 says you get passive aggressive about how someone loaded the dishwasher this week.
What works: Colman and Cumberbatch are terrific sparring partners, and their barbed, rapid-fire bickering is the reason to watch.
What doesn’t: The film can’t decide between broad comedy and dark satire, so the feud never has the bite of the earlier film version.
Who it’s for: Couples with a sense of humor about their own arguments, and fans of the two leads.
After years of feuding, Theo and Ivy finally admit they still love each other, right as gas from Ivy’s broken stove fills the house. Theo, with no idea, tells the smart home to switch on the fireplace, and the movie ends on a flash of white.
Theo (Benedict Cumberbatch) is an architect and Ivy (Olivia Colman) is a cook with big dreams when they meet one afternoon in London. They move to Mendocino, California, have twins, Hattie and Roy, and look like the perfect couple. Then one night a huge storm flips everything. Theo's brand new naval history museum gets wrecked, while the same storm sends a crowd, a top food critic included, into Ivy's new restaurant. Her career takes off. He loses his job and stays home with the kids. Resentment starts simmering. Jay Roach directs. One hundred five minutes, and nobody is passing the salt.
Couples who keep score. Also anyone who has ever fought about how to load the dishwasher.
