Edgar Wright usually makes action that dances, and The Running Man mostly just jogs. Glen Powell plays Ben Richards, blacklisted from work and unable to pay for his little girl’s medicine, so he tries out for a game show and gets drafted into the worst one: last thirty days with professional hunters and ordinary viewers on his trail. Powell is a scrappy, likable lead. The best stretches are the detours, especially a stop in Derry, Maine, where Michael Cera’s activist Elton has a house full of traps waiting for the hunters. Josh Brolin and Colman Domingo make a smooth pair of TV sharks as the producer and the host, and a subplot about faked videos feels uncomfortably current. But at 133 minutes the chase sags, and this kind of TV dystopia is one we’ve seen many times. It made $69.5 million worldwide on a reported $110M budget, which is its own kind of elimination round. A 5.9 because it’s slick, loud and oddly safe. $3,017 says you count every camera in the next store you walk into.
What works: Glen Powell makes a scrappy, likable runner, and the Derry detour with Michael Cera is the film at its liveliest.
What doesn’t: At 133 minutes the chase loses momentum, and the TV dystopia satire feels familiar rather than sharp.
Who it’s for: Glen Powell fans and Stephen King readers curious to see the book’s story told closer to the page.
Ben survives the Network shooting down his plane thanks to an auto-eject seat, and his family turns out to be alive, their deaths faked by Killian. A recovered black box exposes the Network, Ben becomes the face of a rebellion, and he returns for a final showdown with Killian as the next season begins.
In a near-future America, the Network keeps everyone glued to brutal game shows, and the biggest is The Running Man: survive thirty days while professional hunters chase you. Ben Richards (Glen Powell) is a blacklisted worker who can't afford medicine for his sick little girl. He tries out for something safer and gets drafted into the main event instead. Producer Dan Killian (Josh Brolin) seals the deal with a safe house for Ben's family and money for her treatment, while host Bobby T (Colman Domingo) works the crowd. Then Ben vanishes into New York. Edgar Wright directs, from Stephen King's novel. One hundred thirty-three minutes, cardio required.
Anyone who can run thirty days straight. Or at least out of a room.
