Every comeback sports movie beat you can name shows up in The Senior, and it plays every familiar beat with total sincerity. It still gets you. Michael Chiklis plays Mike Flynt, who at 59 gets a second chance at college football and goes after a spot as a linebacker, on a field full of players young enough to be his kids. His son Micah and wife Eileen are played by Brandon Flynn and Mary Stuart Masterson, while Rob Corddry rounds out the cast. Rod Lurie directs, and the whole thing has the soft heart and tidy shape of a TV movie. That’s not a knock. The formula works because it’s done with real skill. It’s based on a true story, with some liberties taken. Critics landed at 79% on Rotten Tomatoes, audiences gave it an A CinemaScore, and it runs a lean 99 minutes. A 6.3 because the playbook is old and still sturdy. $58.73 says you text your old high school coach tonight, or at least scroll to the name and think about it.
What works: The comeback formula is handled with real skill, and a 59-year-old walking onto a college field is an easy story to root for.
What doesn’t: It never strays from the sports-movie playbook, and it takes some liberties with what really happened.
Who it’s for: Families who like true sports stories, and anyone who has ever wondered whether it’s too late to try.
Mike makes the team as a linebacker at 59, just as the real Mike Flynt did at Sul Ross State in 2007, though the film takes some liberties with how it all played out.
Back in 1971, right at the start of his senior year, Mike Flynt (Michael Chiklis) got expelled from Sul Ross State after a fistfight with a teammate. He never got to play that last season. Decades later, at fifty-nine years old, he decides the unfinished business has waited long enough, walks on at his old school and tries to make the team as a linebacker. Mary Stuart Masterson and Brandon Flynn play Eileen and Micah Flynt, with Rob Corddry along for the ride. Rod Lurie directs this true story. Ninety-nine minutes, zero excuses.
Anyone who thinks it is too late. It is not. Bring ice packs.
