Red narrates this movie like he’s scared you’ll miss a single feeling. Every look Andy gives, every pause, Morgan Freeman’s voice shows up to explain it. Thing is, it’s Morgan Freeman’s voice, so you let it slide. The villains are drawn in thick marker too. Warden Norton quotes scripture while running a racket, Captain Hadley exists purely to be hated, and there’s zero gray in either one. None of that sinks it. Tim Robbins plays Andy so still and so private that you lean in for 142 minutes trying to read him. The rooftop scene with the cold beers. The opera record over the yard speakers. Brooks and his crow. Small moments, and the movie trusts them to carry all the weight. It made $28.8 million domestic on a reported $25 million budget, and then 3.25 million IMDb ratings turned it into the movie your uncle calls the best ever made. A 9.3 because it’s a story about patience that earns every one of its minutes. $4,383 says you hear Morgan Freeman narrating your walk to the mailbox tomorrow.
What works: Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman build a friendship that feels lived in, and small moments like the rooftop beers and the opera record carry huge weight.
What doesn’t: The villains are drawn in thick marker with zero gray, and Red’s narration sometimes explains feelings the actors already showed.
Who it’s for: Anyone who needs a reminder that patience is a superpower, and anyone who has had one friendship carry them through a bad stretch.
Andy escapes through a tunnel he spent years digging behind his poster, crawls out through a sewer pipe, and exposes the warden’s money scheme on his way out. Red gets parole, finds the letter Andy left under an oak tree, and the two reunite on a beach in Mexico.
It's 1947, and banker Andy Dufresne (Tim Robbins) gets two life sentences for a double murder he swears he didn't commit. He lands in Shawshank prison in Maine, where Warden Samuel Norton (Bob Gunton) walks around with a Bible in his hand and the guards, led by Captain Byron Hadley (Clancy Brown), are nobody's friends. Andy keeps to himself until he meets Ellis "Red" Redding (Morgan Freeman), the man inside who can get you things. They talk. They play chess. They become friends. Frank Darabont directs. One hundred forty-two minutes behind the walls, and not one of them wasted.
Anyone who can get things. Everybody in here is innocent, by the way.
