Aaron Sorkin went back to Facebook, and this time the audience mostly stayed home. It made $6.7 million domestic on a reported budget somewhere between $30 and $42 million, which is a rough result for a movie this loaded with famous names. The trouble is baked into the idea. The Social Network had a kid in a hoodie building something. This one has a data engineer, a stack of internal research and a reporter trying to get it into print, which is important and also, on screen, a lot of reading. Mikey Madison has the hardest job, playing a real whistleblower whose whole weapon is paperwork. Jeremy Strong as Zuckerberg is the kind of casting you either buy instantly or never do. Bill Burr is in it, a sentence I still can’t fully explain. Critics landed at 55% on Rotten Tomatoes and a 51 on Metacritic. A 5.1 because the story matters more than the movie makes you feel it does. $7.36 says you turn off one notification tonight and feel like a whistleblower for it.
What works: The subject matters, and on paper the cast, with Mikey Madison as Haugen and Jeremy Strong as Zuckerberg, gives it real weight.
What doesn’t: A whistleblower story built on internal documents is tough to make exciting, and critics and audiences mostly didn’t bite.
Who it’s for: Sorkin completists, people who followed the Facebook whistleblower story as it broke, and anyone who likes a thinkpiece in movie form.
Aaron Sorkin goes back to Facebook. In 2019, data engineer Frances Haugen (Mikey Madison) finds out what the company knows about its own product, and Wall Street Journal reporter Jeff Horwitz (Jeremy Allen White) wants the story. Jeremy Strong plays Mark Zuckerberg. Bill Burr is here too. One hundred and twelve minutes of walk-and-talk about your newsfeed.
Anyone who quit Facebook and still checks Instagram.
