Maya fights a wild boar at one point in The Strangers: Chapter 2, and it’s about the only thing in the movie you won’t see coming. Maya lived through her night with the masked trio in Chapter 1, and now she’s in a hospital in Venus, Oregon, where the sheriff waves off her story and seems weirdly eager to keep outside police away. Then the three masks learn she’s still alive. What follows is a long night of running through woods, back roads and strangers’ houses, and every scare shows up exactly when you expect it. The whole hook of this series was masked people with no reason at all, and the flashbacks explaining one of them drain the mystery out. It made $21.9 million worldwide on a reported $8.5M. A 2.6 because it’s tired, tensionless and still only the middle chapter. $33.35 says you finish this and still watch Chapter 3, purely out of spite.
What works: The hospital setup has a decent creepy premise: a survivor nobody believes, in a town that wants her quiet.
What doesn’t: The scares are predictable, the pacing drags, and backstory flashbacks drain the mystery out of the masked strangers.
Who it’s for: Completists who started the trilogy and need to know where Maya’s story goes next.
Maya finally gets the upper hand on Pin-Up Girl, who doesn’t survive an ambulance crash Maya causes on purpose. The film ends with the other two masked strangers finding their partner while Maya watches from the trees, setting up Chapter 3.
Picking up after Chapter 1, Maya (Madelaine Petsch) is laid up in the hospital in Venus, Oregon, a tiny town with a very short list of things to do. She lived through a night with three masked strangers, and she tells the sheriff (Richard Brake) all of it. He and his deputy brush her off and seem awfully eager to keep state and federal police out of town. Then the masked trio find out she is still alive. Night falls, and Maya realizes they are coming for her right there in the hospital. Renny Harlin directs. Ninety-eight minutes, do not answer the door.
Anyone who checks the locks twice. Then a third time, just to be sure.
