The masked strangers were scary because nobody knew why they did it, and The Strangers: Chapter 3 spends a big piece of its 91 minutes explaining exactly why. Flashbacks walk through how Scarecrow, Dollface and Pin-Up Girl found each other years ago in Venus, Oregon, and every answer makes them smaller. Madelaine Petsch’s Maya, the trilogy’s lone survivor, is still trapped in the same tiny town, now dealing with a sheriff she has every reason not to trust. Richard Brake plays him like the shadiest man in the county, which leaves the movie’s reveals with nowhere to land. Her sister and brother-in-law drive in from Portland to find her, and they’re written as thin as the motel walls. Petsch commits, to her credit, and at least it’s short. But this is a third helping of a meal that was cold two chapters ago. It earned a D CinemaScore. A 2.2 because the final chapter answers questions nobody asked. $2,152 says you start telling every visitor this week that Tamara moved out years ago, before they even ask.
What works: Madelaine Petsch commits fully to Maya, and at 91 minutes it at least doesn’t overstay its welcome.
What doesn’t: The flashbacks explaining where the masked trio came from drain away the mystery that made them frightening in the first place.
Who it’s for: Completists who sat through the first two chapters and need to see how Maya’s story ends. Everyone else can skip it.
After losing her sister, Maya drives away from Venus, then turns back to finish it. She tricks Scarecrow into lowering his guard by pretending to fall for him, defeats him, and walks out of his hideout carrying his mask.
Maya (Madelaine Petsch) has already survived two rounds with the masked strangers who haunt Venus, Oregon, and somehow she still has not made it out of town. Help is hard to come by, because nobody in Venus seems that eager to help. Meanwhile her sister Debbie (Rachel Shenton) and brother-in-law Howard (George Young) drive in from Portland, since Maya never showed up there. Renny Harlin directs the last chapter of the trilogy, and this time the strangers get a backstory. Ninety-one minutes, please lock the door.
Anyone with a deadbolt. If someone knocks asking for Tamara, she is not home.
