Rosalina gets kidnapped in the opening minutes, and that’s about the last time The Super Mario Galaxy Movie treats her like she matters. Brie Larson barely gets a line. Everything else moves at the speed of a kid mashing the jump button. Mario, Luigi and a brand-new Yoshi babysit a shrunken Bowser, Peach’s whole castle gets hauled into space, Fox McCloud swoops in from a different franchise, and nothing gets a minute to breathe. Glen Powell’s Fox mostly drives the bus. The planets look incredible, though, every corner stuffed with something to spot, and Jack Black is still the best thing here, playing a pocket-sized Bowser who is very bad at being reformed. Yoshi hatching in Brooklyn and wrecking a museum dinosaur is a sweet little gag. It made $1.01 billion worldwide on a reported $110M, and audiences gave it an A minus CinemaScore. A 4.2 because the art team built a universe and the script forgot to visit it. $908 says you get home and go digging through a drawer for the old Galaxy game.
What works: The planet-hopping visuals are gorgeous and packed with detail, and Jack Black’s shrunken, sulking Bowser gets the biggest laughs.
What doesn’t: Rosalina barely gets to speak, Fox McCloud is wasted, and the story races so fast that no emotional beat ever lands.
Who it’s for: Kids who know every power-up by heart, and grown-ups who can still hum the music from the game.
Peach learns that Rosalina is her long-lost older sister, and together they turn Bowser’s new planet into a fresh world. Mario saves Bowser Jr. from his own runaway creation, Fox hauls both Bowsers off to prison, and Peach finally kisses Mario.
Bowser Jr. (Benny Safdie) wants to honor his defeated dad, Bowser (Jack Black), and his tribute plan is a cannon big enough to wreck the universe. To power it, he kidnaps Rosalina (Brie Larson), the cosmic mom of the little Lumas. Back in the Mushroom Kingdom, Mario (Chris Pratt) and Luigi (Charlie Day) have a new buddy, Yoshi (Donald Glover), who hatched in Brooklyn of all places. Then a lost Luma crash-lands asking for help, and with Princess Peach (Anya Taylor-Joy) and Toad (Keegan-Michael Key) away, the brothers are on duty. Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic direct. Ninety-eight minutes, gravity optional.
Anyone with a spare spaceship and a big grocery budget. Yoshi eats a lot.
