At 136 minutes, The Testament of Ann Lee asks for real patience, and the long middle can feel like a New England winter. Mona Fastvold tells the story of the woman who founded the Shakers as a full musical, built on real Shaker hymns, with worship that shouts, sings and dances. Amanda Seyfried gives the performance of her career as Ann, a girl from the Manchester cotton mills who becomes Mother Ann to her followers. She’s fierce and tender, and she never plays Ann as a fool or a saint. The film takes her faith on its own terms. Lewis Pullman is quietly moving as her brother William, her most loyal believer. A storm at sea, with Ann keeping everyone’s spirits up, is a highlight, and a number showing the Shaker style taking shape in furniture and buildings is gorgeous. It made $4.2 million worldwide on a reported $11M. An 8.1 because it takes belief seriously and swings big. $82.33 says you run your hand along a plain wooden chair at a furniture store this month and suddenly respect it.
What works: Amanda Seyfried is extraordinary as Ann, and the hymn-driven musical numbers make the Shakers’ worship feel thrilling and alive.
What doesn’t: At 136 minutes the pace sags, especially in the long middle stretch, and the film’s tone can feel elusive and hard to read.
Who it’s for: Viewers who love bold historical films, sacred music and big, fearless lead performances.
After an angry mob attacks Ann and her followers, she never fully recovers, and her brother William dies shortly before her. As Ann dies, she has a vision of being reunited with William and the children she lost, and she is buried in a village that has grown into a thriving community. The credits note that only two Shakers remain.
Ann Lee (Amanda Seyfried) is born in Manchester, England, in 1736 and grows up working in a cotton factory beside her younger brother William (Lewis Pullman). As an adult she turns deeply devout and finds Jane and James Wardley (Stacy Martin, Scott Handy), who lead a small group that worships through public confession and spontaneous, shaking movement. Ann joins them, marries Abraham Standerin (Christopher Abbott), and her faith begins to draw others in. Her close friend Mary Partington (Thomasin McKenzie) narrates. Mona Fastvold directs this musical, its score rooted in real Shaker hymns. One hundred thirty-seven minutes, every hymn on its feet.
Anyone who prays with their whole body. Simple gifts welcome.
