For a movie named after physics, there’s barely any physics in it. You get a chalkboard, some cream swirling in a coffee cup, a lecture or two, then it’s back to the marriage. That’s the catch. This is a love story first, told mostly from Jane’s side, and it smooths over the hardest years so politely that the drama sometimes feels ironed. What makes it worth watching is the acting. Eddie Redmayne’s physical work as Stephen Hawking is precise and never showy, his posture shifting a little more with every scene. Felicity Jones has the harder part, a woman giving everything to a life that keeps getting heavier, and she plays it with real steel. It’s gentle with the people it’s about, which is both its kindness and its limit. It made $123.7 million worldwide on a reported $15 million budget. A 7.0 because the performances are great and the script plays it safe. $43.63 says you end up watching a black hole explainer after the credits and actually finish it.
What works: Eddie Redmayne’s precise physical performance and Felicity Jones’ quiet strength make the marriage feel real.
What doesn’t: The script smooths over the hardest years, barely touches the actual science, and moves through famous moments like a checklist.
Who it’s for: People who love romance dramas about real lives, and anyone who wants a gentle intro to Hawking before picking up his books.
The marriage doesn’t last. Stephen and Jane separate, he builds a life with his nurse Elaine, Jane marries Jonathan, and the two stay close. The film ends by rewinding all the way back to the day they first met.
Cambridge, 1963. Stephen Hawking (Eddie Redmayne) is a brilliant, scruffy physics grad student who can't settle on a thesis topic. At a party he meets Jane Wilde (Felicity Jones), an arts student who goes to church and isn't afraid to argue with him. They fall for each other fast. Then Stephen takes a hard fall on campus, and doctors tell him he has motor neuron disease and maybe two years to live. Jane decides she's staying anyway. His supervisor Dennis Sciama (David Thewlis) pushes him to keep working. James Marsh directs. One hundred twenty-three minutes, one very big question about time.
Stargazers, chalkboard scribblers and anyone who loves a big question.
