The Twilight Saga: Eclipse (2010)

Inside a tent on a snowy mountain, two guys argue over which one of them is warmer while the girl they’re fighting over shivers in a sleeping bag. That’s the big romantic showdown of Eclipse. Bella spends the whole chapter getting passed back and forth like a group project, and Kristen Stewart looks as tired of the triangle as we are. David Slade gives the action some real snap, though. The army of newborn vampires and the training sessions where the Cullens and the wolf pack learn to fight side by side are the first time this series feels like it has a pulse. Jackson Rathbone finally gets a flashback as Jasper, and it beats the whole love story. The middle is mostly meaningful staring on mountaintops. It made $699 million worldwide on a reported $68M. A 3.8 because the fights wake it up and the love triangle puts it right back to sleep. $2,281 says you end up debating Team Edward versus Team Jacob with someone who was in kindergarten when it came out.

What works: The newborn army and the joint training scenes give the saga its first real action, and Jasper’s backstory is a highlight.

What doesn’t: The love triangle eats most of the runtime, and it’s mostly long stares and repeated arguments that go nowhere new.

Who it’s for: Twilight fans who wanted more action and are still firmly on one team or the other.
