Rotten Tomatoes critics sit at 48%, Metacritic at 35, and the people who showed up opening weekend gave The Unbreakable Boy an A on CinemaScore. The split makes sense: it’s a true story with real weight that keeps reaching for the easy hug. Zachary Levi plays Scott LeRette and Meghann Fahy plays his wife Teresa, raising their son Austin, played by Jacob Laval, who is on the autism spectrum and has brittle bone disease, along with a younger son, Logan. The film also gives Scott an imaginary friend, Joe, played by Drew Powell, to talk things through with. It comes from the book Scott wrote with Susy Flory, and Lionsgate pulled it days before a planned release, then left it undated for years. A 5.3 because this family’s story deserves more than the movie’s shortcuts. $4,161 says you call whoever raised you before the end credits and don’t explain why.
What works: The real family at the center is inspiring, and audiences responded warmly with an A CinemaScore.
What doesn’t: Critics felt it settles for easy uplift over the harder, messier parts of the story, and the reviews skewed negative.
Who it’s for: Families looking for an uplifting true story, and fans of Zachary Levi’s big-hearted screen persona.
There’s no twist to spoil here. It’s a true story, and the real Scott LeRette went on to write the book about raising Austin that the film is based on.
Based on a true story, this one follows Scott LeRette (Zachary Levi) and his wife Teresa (Meghann Fahy) as they raise their son Austin (Jacob Laval), who is on the autism spectrum and has brittle bone disease, along with his younger brother Logan (Gavin Warren). Roy Jackson Miller plays Austin when he's little. Scott, meanwhile, keeps talking things over with Joe (Drew Powell), his imaginary friend. Patricia Heaton, Amy Acker and Peter Facinelli fill out the cast. Writer and director Jon Gunn adapts the book Scott wrote with Susy Flory. One hundred nine minutes, built to make you hug your family.
Anyone raising a kid who sees the world his own way. You're doing great.
