How The Watchers Performed
movie guru's TLDR

The Watchers has a terrific rulebook and no idea what game it’s playing. Dakota Fanning plays Mina, an artist in Galway asked to deliver a golden parrot to a zoo, whose car dies in the middle of a huge forest in the west of Ireland. She ends up in the Coop, a bunker with one big mirrored window, where Madeline, Ciara and Daniel gather every night while unseen creatures study them from the dark. Be inside before nightfall. Stay out of the Burrows. Ishana Night Shyamalan nails the eerie mood, and the forest looks fantastic. Then the answers start, and every explanation makes the story muddier, with some critics saying it leans too hard on her father’s playbook. It holds a 33% on Rotten Tomatoes and made $33.37 million worldwide on a reported $30 million. A 3.6 because the setup is creepy and the payoff is a shrug. $562.46 says you start getting home before sundown this week and blame it on wanting an early night.

What works: The atmosphere is genuinely eerie, and the nightly ritual at the mirrored window is a great horror image.

What doesn’t: The script gets muddled once it starts explaining itself, and the last act stacks up reveals that drain the tension.

Who it’s for: Folk-horror fans happy to trade answers for a moody walk in the woods.

Spoilers

Madeline turns out to be a fairy herself, cast out by the Watchers because she can endure sunlight, and she tracks the survivors down after they escape. Mina urges her to let go of her hatred of humans, Madeline flies off, and in the final scene she’s watching Mina from a crowd, disguised as a young girl.

The Watchers's Blurbs
About me:

Mina (Dakota Fanning), a 28-year-old artist in Galway, gets a simple job: drive a golden conure parrot to a zoo up north. Then her car dies in the middle of a huge forest in the west of Ireland. As night falls, an older woman named Madeline (Olwen Fouéré) tells her to get inside a bunker if she wants to live. Inside are Ciara (Georgina Campbell) and Daniel (Oliver Finnegan), and one wall is a giant mirrored window. Every night, something out there watches them. The rules are strict. Ishana Night Shyamalan directs. One hundred two minutes, don't go outside.

Who I'd like to meet:

Anyone who follows the rules. All of them. Bring a flashlight.
