Six famous guys playing worse versions of themselves is either a brilliant comedy idea or the world’s most expensive group chat, and This Is the End is both. Half the jokes feel improvised, and scenes keep rolling long after the punchline, like nobody wanted to be the one to yell cut. The middle, with everybody trapped in James Franco’s house fighting over one candy bar and the last of the water, sags hard. But when it hits, it hits huge. Michael Cera playing himself as a total menace is a top-tier bit. Danny McBride wakes up and instantly becomes the worst houseguest in history. Jay Baruchel is the only sane one and you can see him regretting the trip in real time. Critics liked it more than audiences did, and I get why: it’s a little too proud of itself. A 6.9 because the cast is having more fun than you are, but you’re still having plenty. $35.87 says you text a friend asking who gets kicked out of your apocalypse house first.
What works: Michael Cera’s unhinged version of himself, Danny McBride as the houseguest from nowhere, and a cast that clearly loves roasting each other.
What doesn’t: Improvised scenes run long past the joke, and the stuck-in-the-house middle sags before the finale picks it back up.
Who it’s for: Anyone who already knows this crew’s movies and wants to see them turn on each other while the world ends outside.
It really is the Rapture, and doing one selfless thing gets you beamed up. Craig goes first, Jay and Seth make it at the end, and Heaven turns out to be an endless party with the Backstreet Boys as the house band.
Jay Baruchel flies to Los Angeles to hang out with his old buddy Seth Rogen, and Seth drags him to a housewarming party at James Franco's brand new house. Everybody plays a version of themselves. Jay hates the party, Michael Cera is behaving terribly, and Jonah Hill is being suspiciously nice. Then the sky fills with blue beams of light, the ground cracks open, and the apocalypse starts right outside. Jay, Seth, James, Jonah and Craig Robinson barricade themselves inside, count the snacks and wait for help. The next morning, Danny McBride wakes up. Rogen and Evan Goldberg direct. One hundred seven minutes, one very nice house.
Anyone with bottled water and a good attitude. Party crashers need not apply.
