Quick warning for anyone eyeing Together as a date night pick: it’s a horror movie about a couple who can’t get any space from each other, and it means that far more literally than you’re ready for. The middle drags, with a lot of tense talking between the scares, and opening crowds gave it a C+ CinemaScore, so this one is not for everybody. But it’s smart. Millie and Tim move out to the countryside already on shaky ground after he hesitated when she proposed, and one stormy night stuck in a cave leaves them with a strange pull toward each other they can’t shake. Michael Shanks, in his first feature, turns codependency into a monster, and some moments will have people covering their eyes. Alison Brie and Dave Franco, a married couple off screen too, make the push and pull feel painfully real. It made $34.7 million worldwide. A 7.0 because it’s a real relationship drama hiding inside a wild horror gimmick. $2,339 says you give your partner a little extra elbow room on the couch tonight.
What works: Alison Brie and Dave Franco make the relationship feel lived in, and the central idea is a sharp, creepy way to talk about couples who lose themselves in each other.
What doesn’t: The middle stretch drags between scares, and a few moments go so far that plenty of viewers will tap out.
Who it’s for: Horror fans in long relationships who can laugh at how close to home it hits.
Jamie, the helpful coworker, turns out to be one half of a couple the cave already joined, and he wants Millie and Tim to stop resisting. In the end they do, and the movie closes on the most literal version of its title.
Millie (Alison Brie) and Tim (Dave Franco) have been together for years, but things are shaky. Millie takes a job teaching English at an elementary school out in the countryside, so they move, right after Tim freezes when she proposes at their going-away party. Tim, a would-be musician, has been distant since losing his parents. Millie's new coworker Jamie (Damon Herriman) suggests some local hiking trails. A storm drops them into an underground cave overnight, and by morning something strange has started: the two of them keep getting pulled toward each other, and not in a romantic way. Michael Shanks writes and directs. One hundred two minutes, codependency gets literal.
Couples who say they can't live without each other. Maybe rethink that.
