How Trainspotting Performed
movie guru's TLDR

Most movies about addiction play like a lecture. Trainspotting refuses to, and that’s exactly why it can be so hard to sit through. Danny Boyle doesn’t soften anything. The early scenes play like a party on purpose, and then the bills come due, in hospital beds, in empty flats and in one quiet tragedy that stays with you long after the credits. It’s also funny, which feels wrong until you get it. Ewan McGregor’s Renton narrates like he’s arguing with you, Robert Carlyle’s Begbie is a walking bar fight, and Ewen Bremner’s Spud has a job interview scene that steals the whole movie. The accents are thick and the slang is thicker, so turn on subtitles the first time. 93 minutes, no fat. The movie.guru score of 9.4 puts it near the top of everything. An 8.8 because it’s fearless and alive, though a few scenes are rough enough to make anyone look away. $15.86 says you finish it, sit quietly for a minute, then call somebody you love.

What works: Boyle’s restless energy, a sharp cast led by Ewan McGregor, and a story that finds humor without pretending the damage isn’t real.

What doesn’t: Several scenes are genuinely hard to watch, and the thick accents and slang can lose first-time viewers early on.

Who it’s for: Grown-up viewers who want a fearless, fast story about friendship and addiction that doesn’t preach or look away.

Spoilers

After one big score in London, Renton walks off with the money while his friends sleep, quietly leaving Spud his share. The last shot is Renton heading toward the camera, saying he’s ready to choose an ordinary life.

Great
Trainspotting's Blurbs
About me:

Edinburgh, the late eighties. Mark Renton (Ewan McGregor) and his friends are caught in a loop of heroin addiction, petty theft and terrible ideas, and Renton narrates it all like a stand-up set. The crew: lovable mess Spud (Ewen Bremner), smooth talker Sick Boy (Jonny Lee Miller), clean-living Tommy (Kevin McKidd), and Begbie (Robert Carlyle), who skips the drugs but never skips a fight. Renton decides to get clean, again. Danny Boyle directs with wild energy and zero glamour. Ninety-three minutes, choose wisely.

Who I'd like to meet:

Anyone who wants the honest version, not the glamorous one. Look out for your friends.
